Part Used & Method for Pharmaceutical Preparations: The tuberous roots are dug in autumn or spring. They are cleaned, cut into slices and dried in the sun.
Properties & Taste: Bitter, sweet, astringent and slightly warm Meridians: Liver and kidney
Functions: 1. To nourish blood and replenish essence; 2. To moisten the intestines and move stool; 3. To release toxins
Indications & Combinations:
1. Deficient blood syndrome manifested as sallow complexion, dizziness, vertigo, insomnia, early graying of hair and soreness and weakness in the lumbar region and knees. Fleece flower root (Heshouwu) is used with Prepared rehmannia root (Shudihuang), Grossy privet fruit (Nuzhenzi), Wolfberry fruit (Gouqizi), Dadder seed (Tusizi) and Mulberry mistletoe (Sangjisheng).
2. Constipation due to dryness in the intestines. Fleece flower root (Heshouwu) is used with Chinese angelica root (Danggui) and Hemp seed (Huomaren).
3. Chronic malaria due to weakness of the body. Fleece flower root (Heshouwu) is used with Ginseng (Renshen) and Chinese angelica root (Danggui) in the formula He Ren Yin.
4. Scrofula. Fleece flower root (Heshouwu) is used with Prunella spike (Xiakucao) and Tendrilled fritillary bulb (Chuanbeimu).

"He Shou Wu" in Chinese can be translated into "Black Hair Mr. He". It is often prescribed with Chinese Angelica root, wolfbery fruit and dodder seed as in hair beauty pill or formulas for restoration to normal hair color and prevention of hair to gray. Must be taken for several months in order to restore normal hair color.
